Differences Between Parcel Delivery and Freight Shipping
You might be wondering whether you need parcel shipping or parcel freight. In the battle of LTL vs. parcel, it all comes down to size.
If you want to send a parcel, your package must weigh less than 150 pounds. On the other hand, freight shipping is for heavier shipments.
Many companies are finding that they take advantage of both LTL freight and parcel delivery. Parcel shipping costs are less than freight, so rather than using LTL for every shipment, using a combination of both types of shipping services is the most cost-effective way of doing business.
What Is Parcel Shipping?
Parcel shipping means sending smaller, lighter items in a faster, more efficient way. You should use a parcel service if you have multiple smaller boxes that can be moved without assistance.
Parcel carriers pack their parcel shipments in boxes that go onto a truck, rather than on pallets as you would for LTL shipping.

What Is Freight Shipping?
Freight shipping is a wide-ranging term that refers to a variety of LTL shipping methods. Freight shipping could be by air, sea, or land, and the shipments are all packed in bulk rather than in individual packages.
Freight shipments usually contain multiple pallets full of goods that go into shipping containers. The shipping containers will be sent to a loading dock and then move on to their final destination.
Just like with parcel shipping, you will receive a tracking number and will know when to expect your shipment to arrive.
Benefits of Small Parcel Shipping
If you have a time sensitive shipment that needs to go out, small parcel shipping is likely your best option.
Small parcel shipping rates will be lower than typical rates, so when you pay extra for expedited shipping, the cost might not be too prohibitive.
If your items are not time sensitive, it is possible that you would be best off using USPS flat rate boxes, as flat rate shipping can be a cost-effective way to send items on a loose time frame. But you will not know for sure until you have researched all possibilities. The only way to do that is to fill out our form and go over your quotes.
How to Prepare Your Parcel for Shipping?
Instead of being securely fastened to a pallet, parcel shipping companies loosely pack boxes onto a truck. In order to ensure that your package stays safe and secure, you will need to package it correctly.
- Find a sturdy box that is relatively new. The box should be large enough to fit your item comfortably and allow room for packaging materials to keep the item secure. Make sure to use bubble wrap or other materials to keep your item padded. Once you have it all packed up, you will need packaging tape that is 2” wide to secure the box.
- When the box is fully secured, weigh it, and measure its dimensions. You will have to measure the height, width, and length of the package. These numbers will be necessary to get an accurate shipping parcel cost from the parcel delivery service.
- Once you have measured the box dimensions, address it the same way you would an envelope. Put your return address on the top left of the box and the recipient’s address in the middle of the box. Once on the truck, you should have access to your parcel shipping tracking number.
