What Is FTL (Full Truckload) Shipping?
FTL shipping means one shipper's freight uses a dedicated trailer. The truck is loaded at your pickup location and usually travels directly to the delivery location, with no stops at terminals and no transfers between trucks. Your freight is handled less, which lowers the risk of damage and makes transit times more predictable.
FTL is usually the right choice when your freight fills most of a trailer, is heavy, fragile or time-sensitive, or needs specific equipment such as a reefer or a flatbed. For smaller loads that don't need a whole trailer, partial truckloads or LTL can cost less.
What Factors Determine FTL Freight Rates?
| Pricing Factor | What It Means | Why It Changes Your Quote |
|---|---|---|
| Distance and Lane | The route between pickup and delivery. | Longer trips cost more in fuel and driver time. Busy lanes with plenty of trucks are usually cheaper than remote routes. |
| Truck Type | The trailer or equipment your freight needs. | Specialized equipment such as reefers, flatbeds, step decks and RGNs usually costs more than a standard dry van. |
| Truck Availability | How many trucks are available on your lane and date. | Rates move with the market. Short notice, peak seasons and tight capacity push prices up. |
| Weight and Commodity | What you ship and how heavy it is. | Heavy, oversized or hazardous loads can need specific equipment, permits and certified drivers. |
| Additional Services | Services beyond a standard pickup and delivery. | Driver assistance, expedited service and team drivers add cost. |

FTL or LTL: Which Should You Choose?
- Choose FTL when your shipment fills most of a trailer, needs a specific truck type, or must go directly from pickup to delivery without transfers.
- Choose LTL when your freight takes up only part of a trailer, so you share the truck and pay only for the space you use. Compare LTL rates with our LTL Freight Quote Calculator.
FTL Freight Quote FAQs
What is FTL freight shipping?
FTL (Full Truckload) shipping uses an entire trailer for one shipper's freight. It usually travels directly from pickup to delivery without terminal stops.
Which truck types can I request?
You can request a 53' dry van, flatbed, refrigerated trailer, step deck, Conestoga, double drop, RGN, power only, 26' box truck (with or without liftgate), or a 20', 40' or high-cube container.
Can I ship hazardous materials with FTL?
Yes. Check Hazmat on the form and enter the UN number, hazmat class, packing group and emergency contact, so we can match your load with a qualified carrier.
Is the FTL estimate my final price?
The estimate reflects current truck availability on your lane. Because truckload rates move with the market, your final rate is confirmed when a truck is secured for your load.
