What Factors Determine Your LTL Freight Rates?

LTL (Less-Than-Truckload) shipping consolidates your cargo into a shared trailer alongside other businesses' freight. Because space is optimized dynamically, carriers calculate your final quote using five core metrics:

Pricing Factor Technical Definition Why It Changes Your Quote
Weight and CWT Total shipment poundage. Rates are scaled per hundred pounds (CWT). Higher total weight often triggers cheaper bulk rate breaks.
Density Mass relative to space: weight divided by cubic feet. Low-density, bulky items occupy valuable trailer footprint while weighing very little, driving up costs.
Freight Class The 18 NMFTA classifications (50 to 500). Assessed based on stowability, ease of handling, liability risk, and value. Higher class equals higher cost.
Lane and Distance The geographic route between origin and destination. Extended mileage increases fuel and driver overhead. Busy shipping lanes are generally cheaper than remote routes.
Accessorials Extra physical services outside standard dock-to-dock transit. Liftgate services, residential pickups, inside deliveries, or limited-access locations incur fixed surcharges.

Pro Tip on FAK (Freight All Kinds): If your business regularly ships items across multiple disparate classes, our team can help negotiate an FAK agreement. This treats varying commodities under a single, unified freight class to dramatically lower baseline expenditures.

Freight Quote FAQs

What is LTL freight shipping?

LTL (Less-Than-Truckload) shipping is used when a shipment doesn't require a full 48ft or 53ft trailer. Multiple shippers share trailer space, split the over-the-road operational costs, and pay only for the volume and weight their specific pallets occupy.

Is FreightRun a carrier or a freight broker?

FreightRun is a licensed freight brokerage platform. We aggregate the volume of thousands of shippers to negotiate discounted institutional tariffs with over 50 national, regional, and local carriers, passing those savings directly to your dashboard.

How accurate are the instant online calculator quotes?

The quotes are 100% accurate if your inputs are precise. Surcharges or billing adjustments usually happen if a carrier determines the actual weight, NMFTA freight class, or delivery destination details such as an unmentioned residential liftgate requirement differ from what was originally entered.

How long does LTL transport typically take?

Standard regional transit loops take 1-3 business days. Cross-country shipping lanes usually take 4-7 business days depending on the specific carrier networks and lane congestion.
